Happy Hour

Time for a beverage.  Can’t decide whether you want to have a beer or a mixed drink?  Why not have a beer cocktail?  Or how about combining several beers together to create a different concoction.  There are so many varieties.  Here are just a few that are delicious:

Light beer and a margarita has been a staple some Mexican restaurants.  Recipe: (serves 8) :

  • 1 – 12 oz can frozen limeade concentrate – thawed
  • 10 oz white tequila
  • 2 – 12 oz bottles of light lager (example: Corona)

Combine the limeade and tequila in a pitcher.  When fully mixed, add beer.  Pour over ice into salt-rimmed glasses and garnish with lime wedges.

Beer for breakfast?  This recipe is an update of the traditional champagne and juice mimosa. Recipe:

  • 6 oz orange or grapefruit juice
  • 6 oz wheat beer – example Side Launch Wheat Beer

Pour juice into glass and top with beer.

Beer punch

What if you could have a refreshing fruit punch…but with a little kick?  Recipe:

  • 12 oz of Sprite
  • 2 ½ cup of pineapple juice
  • 6 bottles or cans of your favourite beer.

Mix all the ingredients in a large pitcher or bowl.  Throw in lemons, limes and orange slices for decoration.

Sometimes known as a radler, this is a favourite in the U.K. Recipe:

  • 6 oz of lager – example Lagershed Lighter
  • 6 oz of ginger beer or gingerale
  • 6oz of lemon-lime soda or lemonade

Combine in a tall glass and garnish with a lemon wedge.

Black and Tan

Two beers are better than one, am I right? Recipe:

  • 6 oz pale beer – example Great Lakes Brewery – Pompous Ass English Ale
  • 6 oz stout beer – example Guinness

In a tall glass, pore the pale beer into glass.  Then slowly pour the stout into the beer.  Tip:  Place a spoon over the glass and pour the stout over the backing of the spoon to help slowly pour the stout.

On a side note:  This is a North American type of drink.  Do not order a Black and Tan while in Ireland.  They would consider this rude.

This recipe also combines two different types of beers. Recipe:

  • 6 oz cider – example Ironwood Hard Cider – Original
  • 6 oz stout beer – example Guinness

Pour the beer together just like the Black and Tan.

French Monaco

For a fancier cocktail try a French Monaco. Recipe:

  • 1 ½ oz pomegranate syrup
  • 2 oz lemonade
  • 6 oz pale lager – example Amsterdam Brewing Company: Blonde Lager

In an ice-filled shaker, syrup and lemonade.  Shake vigorously and strain into chilled beer glass.  Then top with beer.

  1. YUM! I would totally have them all. Nice and light for a summer patio! One cool play on the Black and Tan is sometimes called a black pumpkin or black lantern. You combine the Guinness with a pumpkin ale/lager and yes it is amazing!! Great treat at Halloween.

  2. I think of all the information about various ways to incorporate beers into cocktails, the comment about not ordering the black and tan in Ireland is highly underrated. Great Post! Personal favorite of the list presented is beer punch. Simple enough to make but with beer gives it an extra kick.
